White's Tavern

A Brief History

Located in Winecellar Entry, steeped in history, culture and established in 1630. White’s Tavern welcomes you to the oldest tavern in Belfast. The city’s first-ever tavern license was granted to the very building where we stand, making us the premier bar and pub of Belfast. Beside us we have White’s Garden, White’s Beer Hall and White’s Store charming additions to our traditional Irish bar since 1868. Renowned for our high-quality food, creamy pints and more. We are often named amongst the best places for a pint of Guinness in Belfast.

1630

The first tavern

With the first Tavern license of Belfast being granted in 1630 to the building where Whites now stands, this makes it the oldest in Belfast. The building has a great depth and history, from housing the Tavern as we know it, to a hotel and also many wine and spirit merchants. It is said that the Bateson family established the first wine and spirit store in Winecellar Entry.

1868

The oyster rooms

In 1868, the establishment known as The Oyster Rooms was born. Proprietor John Walker, a fish monger and spirit merchant by trade set up shop in Winecellar Entry. Fished from the loughs of Belfast and Carlingford, he became known for his supply of top quality oyster to the city.

2019

The Renovation

Refurbished in 2019, The Clover Group aim was to bring life back into the Tavern. From the open fire to sit beside to the lowered bar top, the Tavern is the perfect place to enjoy Irish hospitality. Enjoy Irish food, local bands, traditional Irish music and of course Guinness as it should be.

Extended in 2020, Whites Garden was opened; with the entrance on High Street. An open air space, including a retractable roof, gives you that botanical feel in the heart of the city centre. Enjoy seasonal cocktails, small plates & more.

Another addition to the Whites family came in October 2022, Whites Beer Hall. A traditional Irish bar with a modern twist, including an open fire and large screens to catch all the latest sport. Enjoy one of the best Sunday Roasts in the city, accompanied by live music and a cocktail in hand.

The final addition came in June 2023, Whites Store. The first Guinness only bar in the isle of Ireland. Pull up a stool, settle in and enjoy the best pint of Guinness Belfast has to offer.
